  1. Why do we pick always the negiative aspect of media? Is it because it grips us to our primial instints, I would say we look at the youngstown state university shooting an say, why are we attracted to this? I dont like to here about young people getting shot at but then it is interseting and it feeds our beast within us.

  2. What makes bad news in the media more interesting to people that watch it?
Does the fact that it happened to college kids make it more appealing to you as a reader? Why?

  3. Disaster, death and violence are appealing an audience. We don't enjoy watching people die or get hurt but we take more of an interest when broadcasts on the news are more extreme. The fact that this disaster involved young teenagers and college students attracts an audience even more. Youth is so fragile and when one hears of someone who has barely yet to live their life dies, its not only a disaster its tragic. Tragedy appeals to the human eye. Although, disaster, death and violence appeals to us so does good news, such as new member of the family, survivors of a disaster or problems being solved. I agree with shaun though, we seem to always pick the negative aspects of the media. Do we pick it because it is more interesting than say 'good media' or because it is easier to find information on disasters whcih project negative media?

  4. I agree with shaun. No one wants to hear about college kids getting shot, but at the same time, when it happens, there is something intriguing about it. Is this because of the tragedy that we find it intriguing, or just because it is different than the norm?

  5. I think this is so appealing because it is about young kids and the fact that they lost their lives draws a lot of emotion into the story.
Yes, because we are college students it makes it more appealing especially because it makes you think that it could happen on any campus. When the story first came out, the news headlines just said there was a shooting on an Ohio campus. Because it didn't specify, many people were interested to find out what school and in what part of Ohio.
In response to Joe's question, I think we find it intriguing because it is a tragedy.

  6. I just want to know what drives someone to shoot innocent people at a party? It would be one thing if they were shooting someone with a gun, or someone who was even trying to fight back, but an innocent person? That just makes me sick. And multiple times? I mean they are already dead, just stop.

  7. Im sure we all would prefer if students werent getting shot and killed especially at a party. I think we find it interesting partly because of the commonplace commitments:timely, relevant, and compelling. A college shooting:it was definitely timely happening less than a month ago, its relevant to us becuase we are college students and so were the victims and we were not too far from the disaster. I think it was also compelling because when you think about it, how many of us go to frat parties, which is exactly what that was. So i think the situation also puts fear in us because we think that it could have been our campus as well, and although it wasnt with students most recently our campus has seen a shooting. I think these are the reasons we find something like that interesting, not just because we focus on negativity.

  8. I absolutely agree with Mallory. We find it interesting mainly because it is relevant and compelling. The fact that I am still a college student attracted me to this news. Many times, after reading such news,I start to worry that I might encounter such disaster while I'm still in the college. What's more is that OSU is such a big campus and anything could happen in such a huge environment. This kind of news intrigued me and made me fearful.

  9. It is true: if someone was asked are more people murdered today, then lets say ten years ago, a majority would answer yes. However, crime rates have actually been going down. It is the overwhelming amount of negative news shown daily which misleads us. I am not saying that there is not a lot of crime going on, I just believe that the news tends to amplify many situations.

I feel like everyone has stated that this intrigued them because it was timely, relevent and compelling, and I agree with theri statements.

This is by far not the first school shooting that I have heard about, let alone the first shooting. This makes me wonder if the constant media on shootings is giving some people ideas to participate in such activities. I am not saying that the news is the sole reason for shootings, because I am well aware that it is mainly due to psychological issues. But, this is just an idea that has come to my attention and could be a small factor.
