1. Do you think that the United States should stop playing "big brother" to other countries and start to focus on their own problems? Why?

2. If the war in Iraq and Afghanistan , and all other wars, have been in the paper for so long, why do people still want to read about it? Don't we always want to hear about the new, more exciting things going on in our country and throughout the world?

  1. Even though the war in Iraq and Afghanistan have been going on for awhile, I think it is important to hear about it in the daily news. As an American citizen we should have consent updates if a solider has been killed, if there was road-side bomb, etc. Not only that, but these wars affect our daily lives and our economy as well, which we hear about on daily basis. Such as oil, but might even go up to 4 dollars a gallon, has some relation to the war, and someone who drives, would like to hear why this would be happening. Also, with the revolutions going on in Egypt and Libya are near by and may also have affect on these wars somehow and is another reason their should be consent updates about these wars. Most stories about the wars lately all are some what related and this is why in my opinion they are so important they should be in the news on a daily basis.

  2. I agree with ral16, I think that the war is very important to us and affects all citizens of this country. Yes it has been going on for a while now but it is still happening. This is different than if one tragedy were to happen and then its over so ofcourse its not going to be in the news forever but the war on the other hand is still going on. Soldiers are still dying and i think each death is relevant to us as a country whether it happened at the beginning of the war or now. Also, a concern for me and for many others i assume is when is the war going to be completely over so this is another reason why i think constant updates are necessary.

  3. Yes, we should want to hear about the new and exciting news going on in the world. But the fact is, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan still have such an influence and impact on our nation that we are still interested in them. As Raleigh said, gas is such a big portion of our every day lives so of course we are going to be wondering about the oil situation in Afghanistan which relates to the war. Although we should be wanting to know more about new problems and situations in the world, the US is concerned with themselves which is why we still care so much about what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  4. I believe there is only so much one country can do. We have been in Irag and Afghanistan for about what 8 years? Over this past decade our economy has plumetted and we have lost focus of our own country. So no, I don't think we can play "Big Brother" forever. I understand some countries need a helping hand, but if we hold their hand forever they will never be able to function alone. Regarding question number two, I agree with raI16. As an American citizen we like to be aware of what is going on in our country and in others, especially if it concerns our soldiers. Obviously, the more exciting news will draw our attention a little bit more, but that doesn't mean the war in Iraq or Afghanistan is still not just as important.

  5. I believe the US should stop trying to play 'big brother' to countries. In our country we have enough problems to worry about with poverty and the economy along with many other things yet we still want to get involved in other country's affairs. When we do get involved with other countries we usually get in too deep and at that point can't get out without spending millions of dollars on the situation. Unless the problem is directly effecting us I believe that the US should stay out of other countries and let them solve them theirselves.

  6. I don't think there are any new and exciting things going on in our country. All we have a terrible economy that's slowly rebounding, a completely biased media that in regards to news is either liberal or conservative which causes arguments everywhere and doesn't really allow for actual news to be covered.
Also we shouldn't be involved in other countries. We aren't a charity organization, we need to re-establish that we are the most powerful nation in the world because we haven't been for a while.

  7. As stated in the article, "It seems we are consumed by the peccadilloes of the powerful, with an eagerness to embrace schadenfreude that isn't always appealing." It seems that it is important to know about what is going on around the world, especially when it has such a huge influence over us but the way that the media is portraying things may be overly negative because that is what is appealing to viewers. I think a lot of people have a problem with the negative light that our involvement is cast in because it only lowers morale and doesn't give credit to the accomplishments being made, regardless of personal convictions.
We should be hearing about the newest updates on all situations and I don't think that really should make it necessary to omit other important stories. When watching the news, it's sometimes sad what material is deemed important. I don't think there is any reason we need to omit important news reports, new or old.

  8. Comming from a view somewhat different than most, I belive that the United States should get involved with foreign relations if the outcome could drasticly impact our society in the future, in example, look what happened in Afghanistain almost 20 years ago when the terrorist group Al Qaeda with Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden. If the actions would have taken place would September 11th happend. So it is our responsibities to ensure the right people our repersenting us (Americans) in order to make those hard discisions that no only affect us, but our children also.

It is the medias responsiblite to show what is happening around the world, sometimes as humans we tend to forget/ or just get numb to the reaction of Americans at war, if it doesnt affect them as a family member of friend, I think we loose sight. Watch, next year at this time we will be talking about pulling out of Afghanistain because of the new presidental campagin.

  9. I agree with Mallory in that the war in Afghanistan is an ongoing issue and something that the American people should still be receiving updates on. Even though this war, along with others, has been in the news for quite some time there are still countless people who have personal connections to the events in the Middle East. Also, I believe that the U.S. doesn't need to play "big brother" at every given opportunity, but it terms of foreign relations it would be good for us to help when we can.
